A nice walk or bike ride works wonders. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and clear your mind. Plus, going with someone often leads to the best conversations. Either way, there are plenty of reasons to get out and explore. We have beautiful nature areas for you to discover.
Stiphoutse Bossen
The Stiphoutse Bossen is a large nature reserve located on the border of the three municipalities of Helmond, Laarbeek, and Nuenen, Gerwen, and Nederwetten. It is known for its many ponds, such as Hoolven, Wasven, and Kamersven. The latter is the largest and, although often dry, is a beautiful open space in the quietest part of the forest. There are several marked walking routes from Helmond that start at the parking lot halfway along the Gerwen-Stiphout road.
Bakelsche beemden
The Bakelsche Beemden, also known simply as Bakelse Beemd, is a nature reserve of 76 hectares on either side of the Bakelse Aa. It is located on the northern side of Dierdonk. It serves as a buffer zone between the city and the surrounding countryside. Here, you can walk through an impressive poplar forest towards the Rijpelberg. Don’t be surprised if you hear a drumming sound, as woodpeckers also find this a particularly pleasant area to stay.
The Bakelse bossen
You could wander endlessly through this area due to its vast size. Previously part of Bakel and Milheeze, it is now enclosed by Rijpelberg and Dierdonk. To the east, it is bordered by the valley of the Bakelse Aa; to the west by the Zuid-Willemsvaart. The forest mainly consists of Scots pines and other coniferous trees. Notable features include drifting sand dunes, a relatively rare juniper bush in the Netherlands, and a small heathland area. While you keep up the pace, the blackbirds and blue tits will fill your ears with their chirping.
Groot Goor
Groot Goor is a forest and nature area located to the east of Mierlo-Hout. While walking, you'll pass through stunning sections of forest, wander by large and small meadows, and can make a stop at orchards. The area is also known for its flora and fauna. You might come across a woodpecker, nightingale, golden oriole, or a little owl. Particularly remarkable is the kingfisher wall, designed as a nesting site for these special birds. With a bit of luck, you might even see them flying. A tip, especially with children: try a tracking tour.
't Gulden Land
't Gulden Land has a beautiful name for a beautiful area. It is nestled between the northernmost point of Helmond and Aarle-Rixtel. Plans are ready to (re)develop the area, as 't Gulden Land will become a place where green space, water, cultural history, and recreation are prioritized. Interesting to know: the name refers to the Gulden Huys that once stood in the middle of the area. Additionally, a stream called Gulden Aa flows through the area. You need to be a bit adventurous, as the area is not very accessible.
