In the seventies, Dutch architect Piet Blom built the cube houses in Helmond. The first three cube houses were built in 1974 and 1975 next to the Europaweg in Helmond, as a foretaste of a larger project that would be realized in the years to follow. The project was classified as “experimental” and as a consequence, it was eligible for more government funding.
Houses and ‘t Speelhuis
The 18 houses of the follow-up project surrounded theater ‘t Speelhuis as one architectonical whole. The theater consisted of 37 cubes and contained three auditoria, the largest of which seated 430 people. The accompanying theater café "Blom & Sanders" was named after the architect Blom and visual artist Har Sanders, the two spiritual fathers of the exceptional building complex.

Opening
In May or June of 1974, the foundation stone was laid. On December 3, the construction works reached the highest point of the first cube house, an important symbolical event for any traditional building project. On October 28, 1977, the theater building was official inaugurated in the presence of Princess Beatrix during the premiere of the musical "Neem Helmond bijvoorbeeld".
’t Speelhuis
The architecture of the theater received mixed reviews from its visitors.
On December 29, 2011, the theater was destroyed in a large fire that also hit the some of the adjoining cube houses.
