Helmond Castle
The largest water castle in the Netherlands, Helmond Castle has been a prominent feature in the center of Helmond for nearly 700 years. The castle originally featured a rectangular courtyard surrounded by three wings. The corners were marked by round, projecting towers with seventeenth-century spires. The northern wing was added in the sixteenth century, and the southern facade once had a drawbridge.
Once encircled by a double moat, only the moat around the building remains today. The adjoining park, once much larger, has shrunk due to Helmond's industrial expansion and the construction of the Traverse road.
